During the ‘Day of Dance’, Saturday 23 April, we present a unique and one-time concert in Het Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp. Under the name Memory Loss Collective Gregory Frateur, Nicolas Rombouts and Sjoerd Bruil improvise on music of the Memory Loss Collection, a choreographic series by Ann Van den Broek in which the musicians were involved. Additionally there’s a movie screening and a talk.

Concert
The musicians Nicolas Rombouts, Sjoerd Bruil and Gregory Frateur (know as (former) band members of Dez Mona), work with Ann Van den Broek for years now. But it’s for the first time that they make a standalone piece of music based on the work of the Flemish choreographer. They will improvise with the music they made for the Memory Loss Collection as point of departure. It’s a musical dive into the darkness of dementia. The concert takes place in a special podium setting designed by scenographer Niek Kortekaas.

Talk
Prior to the concert, there will be a talk in which performer Anthony van Gog, dancewriter, coach and former dancer Marina kaptijn and musician Nicolas Rombouts will contemplate on the multidisciplinarity in the work of Ann Van den Broek, together with Ann Van den Broek herself and moderator Ilka De Wilde. It will be about the artistic collaboration between choreographer, musician, composer and dancer. Roles that often blend together in the work of Ann Van den Broek. Read more about the participants.

Film
Before and after the concert the movie Memory Loss Inside will be screened in an intimate cinema setting. The movie gives a unique view on the choreography of Memory Loss. In this recording you’re not just a spectator more a part of the piece. You get almost oppressively close to the dancers, making their expression even more palpable.

If you have seen the productions, the sounds will conjure the images in your mind’s eye. If you attend the concert with a clean slate, let yourself be transported by the stirring and visceral energy that these men are able to evoke.

Nicolas Rombouts

Nicolas Rombout
As a teenager Nicolas Rombouts (1977) learned to play the double bass as an autodidact. He later follows jazz education at the Lemmens Institute to continue his musical studies at the Conservatory in Antwerp. In 2003 he founded the band Dez Mona, together with Gregory Frateur. In 2016 Rombouts leaves this collective to focus on various multidisciplinary projects. He works together with the Flemish singer Guido Belcanto, the writer Tom Lanoye and the South American singer-songwriter and guitarist Jim White. Rombouts composes music for several theater and dance performances.

Gregory Frateur

Gregory Frateur
Gregory Frateur (1978) is best known as the frontman of the Belgian band Dez Mona. With his unique voice Frateur delights many of us. The flamboyant singer regularly collaborates with other musicians and collectives such as B.O.X. and Tijs Delbeke (member of Balthazar since 2018). He can also be seen in theatre and dance performances as a singer and performer, such as in Van den Vos from Theatre company FC Bergman and several performances by Ann Van den Broek.

Sjoerd Bruil

Sjoerd Bruil
The Antwerp-based Dutch guitarist and composer Sjoerd Bruil (1981) founded his own band, called the Black Cassette, in 2006. With this band he released two albums. He is also a (former) band member of Dez Mona, Sukilove, Millionair and Broken Glass Heroes. This busy bee can also be heard and seen in several productions and choreographies by Ann Van den Broek.

The Memory Loss Collection
The Memory Loss Collection, from which this concert originates, is a collection of productions (2018-2021) by Ann Van den Broek on the theme of dementia. The final piece of this series, Memory Loss, has been nominated for a Zwaan in 2021 (the most important dance prize in the Netherlands) in the category ‘most impressive dance production’.
